Lax Modernozation Update: June Construction Projects Expected To Cause Passenger Impacts
Major construction projects at Los
Angeles International Airport (LAX) will continue to impact travelers
during June with sidewalk and vehicle lane closures and in-terminal
work. This construction, part of a multi-billion-dollar capital
improvement program underway throughout LAX will result in a modern
airport that significantly improves the overall customer experience.
Up-to-date construction alerts showing Central Terminal Area (CTA)
roadway lane restrictions and sidewalk closures, as well as a real-time
traffic map and a helpful pedestrian walking map.
The following roadway lane
restrictions are in effect on a nightly or continuous (24 hours a day,
seven days a week) basis in the airport CTA:

Airport officials are asking motorists to help reduce traffic congestion in and around LAX by taking public transportation to and from LAX, including the inexpensive and convenient LAX FlyAway® nonstop bus service at Union Station, Van Nuys, Westwood, Santa Monica, and Hollywood. If picking up passengers, motorists are encouraged to park and wait at the free LAX Cell Phone Waiting Lot at the intersection of 96th Street and Vicksburg Avenue, next to the entrance of LAX Economy Parking Lot C.

- Speed bumps across all lanes of the Upper/Departures Level roadway in front of Terminal 1 are in place to encourage safer vehicle speed as the roadway hinges are being replaced on the upper level. This traffic calming measure is being strictly enforced during construction, which is expected to be completed in February 2016.
- A 300-foot-long barricade is installed on the Upper/Departures Level curb along the western half of Terminal 1. As a result, motorists can only drop off passengers along the curb before the barricade. Because Terminal 1 is located at the entrance to the airport, there may be some traffic backups on the roads leading into the CTA, and delays getting to all terminals. This closure is expected to continue throughout 2015.
- A barricade installed for elevator and stairwell repairs on the north side of Parking Structure 3 has closed the adjacent vehicle Lane 1. Lane 2 will also be closed on a nightly basis. The barricade will remain in place until the project is completed in October 2015.
- Work in Parking Structure 4 is also underway and will continue through September. It will have the same closures as those listed for Parking Structure 3 (above).
- Repainting of the Terminal 7 pedestrian bridge creates nightly lane restrictions on the Upper/Departures Level that will continue through July 2015.
- Rotating lane closures on the Lower/Arrivals Level roadway remain in effect throughout the CTA.
- Traffic signal work on the Lower/Arrivals Level of the CTA continues and involves curbside and nightly inner lane restrictions, as well as closures of some sidewalks and crosswalks. Work is expected to be completed later this summer.
- Return Way has nightly closures on the Upper/Departures Level, rerouting traffic to Century Boulevard.
- North Center Way from Theme Way to East Way has nightly closures.
Renovations Inside Terminals are also underway:
- Terminal 1: Gates 9, 10,11A and 11B are closed for aircraft apron reconstruction and revitalization of passenger waiting areas as part of Southwest Airlines’ $508-million Terminal 1 Renovation Project. The gates will open intermittently this summer. Barricades will be in place on the west side of all levels of Terminal 1 through late 2015 while office spaces and passenger waiting areas are renovated. Concessions in the center of the terminal remain closed but the food court past the passenger security screening area remains open.
- Terminal 2: As part of LAWA’s nearly $300-million renovation of Terminal 2, a totally new concessions program on both levels is scheduled to be completed this summer. BUILT by The Counter opened the last week of May, while most other concessions in the concourse are closed. Temporary coffee and grab-and-go eateries, retails shops and a duty-free store are open to serve passengers. Work continues at boarding gates throughout the terminal and some waiting areas are closed. Temporary closure of Baggage Carousel 1 is causing domestic travelers to have to go outside to bypass construction and then return inside to claim their baggage. All Terminal 2 construction is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
- Terminal 3: Construction continues on the D10 alleyway adjacent to the terminal on the airfield, requiring airlines using Gates 30 through 32 to tow aircraft to and from the gates. The D10 alleyway is also limited to smaller-size aircraft while work continues on the ramp in front of the Tom Bradley International Terminal’s north concourse.
- Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT): The south side of the mezzanine–level security screen checkpoint is now open to the public and Customs and Border Protection has opened a secondary baggage screening area in TBIT.

- Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Lower/Arrivals Level)
- USA Today Travel Zone (Lower/Arrivals Level)
- See’s Candies (Lower/Arrivals Level)
- Virgin & Boost Mobile (Lower/Arrivals Level)
- 7-Eleven (Lower/Arrivals Level).
- Terminal 4: New ticketing counters are now open. One curbside elevator outside Terminal 4 is temporarily closed due to the Elevator/Escalator Replacement Project. In the interim, passengers are directed to nearby escalators and elevators.
- Terminal 4 Connector: A bump-out sidewalk reroute exists on the Upper/Departures Level for TBIT canopy work.
- Terminal 5: Delta Air Lines continues its renovation causing travelers to encounter construction barricades and work-related noise on both the arrivals and departures levels. One women’s restroom located near the end of the concourse is closed and signage directs the public to nearby facilities. Two curbside elevators are also out of service as part of the Elevator/Escalator Replacement Project and detours are in place. The Delta Sky Club is also undergoing slight renovations. Renovation of the terminal is expected to be completed this summer.
- Terminal 6: Temporary dining and retail locations are open to serve passengers during construction. Due to lack of concession options, passengers are encouraged to use tunnels and walkways located on the secured side of TSA screening to reach Terminals 5, 7, or 8 for a greater variety of eating options. Scaffolding and barricades partially restrict the concourse. Disruptions to passenger flow may be experienced throughout the terminal due to barricades and terrazzo work. Construction on the new concessions program is expected to continue through 2016.
- Terminal 7/8: Construction barricades along the connector corridor between Terminals 7 and 8 have reduced the corridor’s width by approximately 10 feet. Structural steel work to reinforce the columns is taking place behind the barricades as part of the Terminal 7 Renovation Project, which is expected to be completed in December 2017. The waiting area at Gate 71A is also undergoing construction, closing that space for the next several months.
Sidewalk/Walkway Restrictions and Closures are also in effect at the following locations:
- Because of construction on the Fifth Feeder Project, sidewalks and crosswalks beyond the east end of Parking Structure 7 and on the east side of Los Angeles World Airports Clifton A. Moore Administration Building are closed.
- As part of the terminal modernization project, portions of the sidewalk on the Upper/Departures and Lower/Arrivals levels will be closed through 2016. On the upper level, pedestrians will be rerouted into the curbside passenger drop-off lane protected by construction barriers.
- The pedestrian bridge connecting Terminal 3 with Parking Structure 3 is closed through October 2015 as improvements to the parking structure’s elevators and stairwells continue. Improvements to the north side elevators in Parking Structure 3 have resulted in one vehicle lane restriction and a sidewalk closure. Signs have been posted re-routing passengers to other elevators in the parking structure. Work is expected to continue through October 2015.
- The west side elevator and stairwell bank in Parking Structure 4 will be closed through mid-2015. In the interim, passengers are redirected to other elevators and stairwells.
